Application of Big Data Techniques to a Problem
Application of Big Data Techniques to a Problem
From the previous posts, it is clear that Big Data is collected, stored and utilised in the real world at enormous scales by huge companies. Now I want to show directly how these companies use this data to address their problems in the modern world.
Netflix
Netflix is known for its great, vast choice of shows that users love. But how does Netflix know what each individual customer might want to watch?
Netflix recommends specific titles for each user on the home page. It uses multiple algorithms for personalised rankings, searches, similarity ratings, ranking and more to narrow down the shows to display on the recommended screen for each individual customer. It looks at what titles the user has watched, searched for, and rated good or bad so the system can show them similar content. Additionally, if user A shows the same interests as user B, Netflix will show user A the user B's recommended shows. Each show is also put into some of the 75,000 categories they created. So with all of this data and human input being collected, it can accurately recommend each user their specific matches with high success rates.
Uber Eats
Uber Eats wanted to ensure its customers always got their food delivered while it was warm. They offer their users an accurate prediction of the time of the delivery using data collected such as the time taken to prepare a certain meal, so the delivery driver knows exactly when to pick it up, allowing them to pick up meals on their route rather than having to wait for the food to be prepared. An even more extreme data analysis they conduct is employing meteorologists to help them predict what the weather will be like and how it could affect the delivery.
Amazon
Amazon are well known for its application of Big Data to its problems. As a company, it collects vast data on its users at all times. For example, they track what users buy, how long and frequently each customer is online, product reviews, and even people's billing addresses to predict a user's income. This is then conducted on their millions of users to paint a powerful profile of each customer.
They can then use this data for predictive analysis to target their marketing on users which results in suggesting what they might want to buy next or grouping products together to improve the user experience, and maximise their profits. It is definite that Amazon wouldn't be the company it is today without its expert use of Big Data to grow and lead in markets.
